Energy Storage and Battery Shipping: UN 38.3 & Configuration

A commercial product name cannot determine the transport route. The actual cells, batteries and installed configuration do.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Is it an empty enclosure, a battery module or a complete battery-containing unit? Check for backup batteries and other components as well. “The batteries have been removed” needs a configuration record, not just a verbal assurance.

KEY QUESTIONS

Questions to answer before departure

01

Is the shipment lithium-ion or lithium-metal, and are batteries standalone, packed with equipment or installed?

02

What are the model, quantity, mass, watt-hour rating and equipment configuration?

03

Does the UN 38.3 test summary match the manufacturer and model being shipped?

04

Do packing, marks, labels, documents and emergency information match the mode and route?

SHIPMENT-SPECIFIC CHECKS

Describe the equipment exactly as it will be handed to the carrier

The air-transport guide distinguishes chemistry and packing configurations and identifies test-summary information. It does not establish a storage cabinet’s sea-transport classification, port acceptance or import-product compliance. IATA: 2026 battery guidance

For US transport legs, use the relevant rules for the actual battery configuration and operation. Do not transfer a scenario from another mode without checking it. PHMSA: lithium battery shipping scenarios

Replace “documents available” with a traceable model match

  • Manufacturer’s technical owner: Map cabinet, module, cell and battery models to quantities, masses, rated parameters and condition. Identify other components that may need assessment.
  • Manufacturer or document supplier: Provide the test summary and safety information for the actual models. Explain model changes, assembly differences or limits in the document coverage.
  • Dangerous-goods and carrier contacts: Assess classification, packing, documentation and acceptance for the configuration, route and mode. Separately confirm lifting, delivery and storage conditions.

A test file is not a booking acceptance or an installation approval

Even a matched test file leaves packing, loading and route acceptance to be confirmed. Disclose damaged, defective, recalled, prototype or sample status before progressing. An empty main cabinet may still contain smaller batteries or other components requiring assessment. Transport acceptance does not establish destination installation, grid or product approval.

WORKING METHOD

Turn the review into an execution list

01

Map the actual configuration

Distinguish cells, batteries, modules and complete equipment, including how batteries are packed with or installed in the equipment.

02

Match models to test records

Align the manufacturer, model and rated parameters with the corresponding UN 38.3 test summary.

03

Check the transport conditions

Review configuration, quantity, condition, packing and transport mode before deciding what the shipment needs.

04

Plan handling and delivery

Include weight, lifting, securing, temporary storage and destination receiving conditions in the plan.

DOCUMENTS TO PREPARE

Useful records for the first review

  • Configuration list, battery type, model, quantity, mass and watt-hour rating
  • UN 38.3 test summary and available safety data
  • Packing design, protection, marks, labels and photos
  • Dimensions, weight, loading method and destination-handling plan

PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARY

What the logistics plan cannot replace

Acceptance depends on the actual dangerous-goods classification, configuration, condition, mode and carrier rules. One model’s documents cannot automatically cover another.

Scope and content review

Preparation of energy-storage cabinet and battery-equipment files—not a dangerous-goods classification or carrier approval. Air, sea and inland legs require their own checks.
